Historic Footbridge Restoration Let

Monday, October 1, 2012

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $42,460 contract to ACE Coatings Unlimited Inc. of Cottage Grove, OR, to restore the historic Benson Bridge in Multnomah County, OR.

Also known as the Multnomah Falls Bridge, the structure soars 105 feet over Lower Multnomah Falls on the Multnomah Fall–Larch Mountain Trail.

Built in 1914 by the Pacific Bridge Company, the 52-foot-long, 5.8-foot-wide cast-in-place reinforced concrete arch bridge features a 45-foot-long parabolic barrel deck arch that is anchored into rock cliffs.

The bridge rises over Lower Multnomah Falls on the Multnomah Fall–Larch Mountain Trail.

The bridge railings are constructed of pre-cast cylindrical balusters and beveled rail caps.

The 98-year-old structure was named after Oregon businessman Simon Benson, who provided funding for its construction. The footbridge was designed by Karl P. Billner, whose resume includes the design of several additional bridges and viaducts along the historic Columbia River Highway.

The bridge was built as a supplemental part of the Historic Columbia River Highway project, which began in 1913; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 22, 1981.

Performing Repairs

The Total Small Business set-aside project includes pressure washing of bridge surfaces and performing various concrete repairs using materials colored to match the current appearance. The repairs include pressure grouting concrete and installing nylon anchors.

The project also involves abrasive-blast cleaning exposed concrete and corroded reinforcing steel. Containment will be required.

The contract also includes an option for applying two coats of penetrating (silane) sealant to deck surfaces.

The footbridge is scheduled to remain open to the public during repairs, except during pressure washing, abrasive-blast cleaning, deck sealing, or any other work considered dangerous to the public.

Interesting. The Historic Preservation folks around here are quite leery of abrasive blasting on historic concrete.
