A Kansas City, MO, painting contractor has received an $89,635 contract to install epoxy floor coating systems in two aviation hangars at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

Surface Solutions previously applied an epoxy/urethane system to 36,000 square feet of another hangar building at Whiteman Air Force Base, MO.

The Department of the Air Force Global Strike Command awarded the contract to Epoxy Coating Specialists Inc.

Scope of Work

The project includes installing a three-coat system over about 33,950 square feet of floor surfaces inside two existing hangar buildings.

The floors will be shot-blasted and coated with 100% solids epoxy primer and intermediate coats, as well as an aliphatic, chemical-, abrasion- and UV-resistant urethane topcoat with abrasives for slip resistance. The contractor will perform moisture testing and repair damaged or loose substrate before coating application, and will apply directional lines and clear coat.

Base History

Established in 1942 as Sedalia Glider Base, the base was later renamed for life-long Sedalia resident 2nd Lt. George A. Whiteman, who was killed during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, according to visitsedaliamo.com.

Whiteman Air Force Base is now home to the 509th Bomb Wing, assigned to the Eighth Air Force of the Air Force Global Strike Command. It is the only permanent base for the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and “can launch combat sorties directly from Missouri to any spot on the globe,” according to the base website.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the B-2 bombers were the first U.S. aircrafts to enter Afghan airspace, flying round-trip from Missouri and logging record-breaking combat missions in excess of 40 hours.
