The City of Virginia Beach is seeking contractors to perform repairs and upgrades to the outdoor harbor seal tank and exhibit at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.
The deadline for bids is Nov. 14.

The outdoor seal tank and exhibit at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach are due for a facelift. Bids are due next week.

The exhibit consists of a pool area with above-water rocks that allow visitors to observe the seals both swimming in the water and interacting on land. The exhibit also features daily feeding and behavioral training sessions.
Behind the exhibit is a separate pool and holding area, pump and filtration room. The aquarium has five male harbor seals, which can grow between five and six feet long and weigh up to 300 pounds.
About the Project
The project involves removing the existing epoxy coatings from all concrete surfaces within the seal exhibit, acrylic panels on the viewing side of the exhibit, and an 8-by-10-foot landing area that leads into the seal holding building.
Cracks in the concrete will be filled or sealed, and damaged concrete will be repaired.

The facility is home to five male harbor seals up to 300 pounds each.

These concrete surfaces, including the interior of the pool, will then be recoated with a new waterproof epoxy system designed for marine animal pools and aquariums.
A non-skid surface will be added to areas that carry zookeeper foot traffic.
The contractor must perform the work within an enclosure with artificial heat and dehumidification equipment to ensure proper curing and to minimize the impact on exhibit guests.
