The University of Arizona is seeking contractors to install thermal and moisture protection at historic Arizona Stadium.

The project involves cleaning and coating existing traffic-bearing concrete surfaces throughout the stadium with cold liquid-applied elastomeric waterproofing membrane with a quartz aggregate additive. The applied system will include an epoxy primer, an aromatic polyurethane base coat, and an aliphatic urethane finish coat.

The Wildcats' 84-year-old home also includes dorms, offices and a telescope mirror fabricating facility.

The bid deadline is Dec.10. A mandatory pre-bid meeting was held Nov. 26.

Touchdowns and Telescopes

Built in 1928, Arizona Stadium is the original home of the university’s Wildcats football team and once had only 7,000 seats. Today, the stadium has grown to more than 56,000 seats, more than half of which offer views of the nearby Santa Catalina Mountains.

The playing surface was recently renewed with hybrid Bermuda grass—“a natural surface that is resilient and fast,” according to the university website.

Since the first game Oct.12, 1929, against CalTech, the facility has hosted at least one Wildcats home win every season in addition to nine undefeated seasons, according the university.

And the stadium is home to more than just football. Tucked under the facility’s east wing is the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab, which makes mirrors for large telescopes. Two dormitories are located in the south stands, according to Wikipedia. And Sierra Hall, located under the east stands, now houses the Music Department and Residence Life offices.
