The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $2.6 million contract to a Tennessee firm to rehabilitate the Canton Lake Bridge and four sluice gates at the Canton Dam in Canton, OK.

Fuel Tank Maintenance Co., of Cookeville, TN, received the $2,613,150 contract to complete the work, over an active spillway at the dam.

Scope of Work

The Total Small Business set-aside project includes cleaning and recoating two emergency gates and two service gates, as well as conduit liners, hoisting blocks, dogging devices and various appurtenances. The project had been estimated at between $1 million and $5 million.

USACE

The Canton Dam measures 68 feet tall and 15,140 feet long at its crest.

The gates will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a White Metal Finish (SSPC-SP 5) and coated with a vinyl coating system. The conduit liners will be coated with a vinyl coating system; dehumidification is required.

Class 2A containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required to capture the existing lead-based coatings. SSPC-QP 1 certification is also required.

The project also includes coating 32 hatch frames and covers according to Missouri Department of Transportation standards. The hatches and covers will be coated with a calcium sulfonate alkyd system. New bearings will also be installed.

The project also includes applying a water sealer protective coating to 3,830 square yards of concrete and repairing 281 square feet of concrete with fiber-reinforced polymer material.

Canton Dam

Canton Dam was constructed in 1948. When it became necessary to increase spillway discharge capacity to pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF), USACE decided to construct an auxiliary spillway through the right abutment. The structure measures 68 feet tall and 15,140 feet long at its crest with a maximum storage capacity of 383,000 acre-feet.

The dam is undergoing a multi-phase safety project that includes building an auxiliary, fuse-gated channel capable of passing the PMF. The project will require more than a decade of study, design and construction. The cost is estimated at $209 million.

Both the Canton Lake and Dam are owned and operated by the USACE.
