A Maryland school district is looking for something a little bit different to finish the floors of select auditoriums and other locations.
The Anne Arundel County Public School district is seeking proposals for a methyl-methacrylate (MMA) self-leveling floor system with a touch of decorative vinyl flake broadcast. Bids and samples are due March 7.
The contract lasts for two years and includes two optional one-year extensions.

The contract may include work at any of the district's 119 schools, including Old Mill High School and MacArthur Middle School.

Scope of Work
Contractors will be asked to furnish and install quartz-style MMA flooring to select auditoriums and other locations as requested/needed.
The flooring system must consist a 100% reactive resin, MMA-based acrylic, which will have a minimum compressive strength of 6,000 psi when cured. A bleach aluminum oxide non-skid additive will be broadcast, as well as a full-flake self-leveling coating with broadcast colored vinyl.
The concrete will be cleaned by shot-blasting or mechanical grinding.
The contractor will also be responsible for repairing concrete as necessary and filling holes left by the removal of any existing seating in any auditoriums with polymer concrete.
After surface preparation is complete, bond tests will be carried out as school district specifications dictate.
Inspections on behalf of the manufacturer will be completed throughout all stages of work: after surface preparation, before and during application, and after the floor is finished and cured.
Other Requirements
Contractors must have 10 years of experience in manufacturing MMA polymer concrete, including 10 projects similar in size and scope. A pre-bid meeting was held Feb. 21. A site visit is strongly recommended.
Samples of the flooring, in available color and finish, must be submitted to the owner on a 4-by-4-inch acrylic set full depth of plywood in acrylic base, with a proportion mix of select colors written on the back of the sample. A representative of the manufacturer must provide a 12-by-12-inch sample of the acrylic flooring system for approval.
About the Site
The school district includes 12 high schools, 19 middle schools, and 78 elementary schools, including several National Blue Ribbon recipients and Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.
Four of the schools are located within Fort Meade; work at these locations may entail additional security procedures.
