NYC Invites Bridge Inspection Bids

Thursday, March 21, 2013

New York City’s Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority is requesting expressions of interest for construction administration, coating inspection services, and repairs on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

The contract is estimated at between $2.7 million and $3.7 million.

The iconic 13,700-foot-long structure is a double-decked suspension bridge that connects the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn in New York City over the Narrows.

Scope of Work

The contract involves providing construction administration, inspection, testing, emergency response and support services for performing miscellaneous painting tasks on the bridge, as well as performing repairs on the Brooklyn approach ramp bridges and suspended catwalks.

The project includes inspections and repairs for structural deterioration on the 53-year-old bridge, which connects Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The project also calls for addressing structural deteriorations, including substructure and deck concrete spall/crack/hollow sounding repairs, tilted defective rocker bearings, and superstructure steel components.

Also planned: repairing traveler runway rail beams and hangers to address localized pack rust, loose plate, holes, deformation and localized holes and section losses on traveler railing beams and hangers, as well as addressing structural flags on the approach structure to the suspended spans.

Repairs also include waterproofing/sealing the roadway, performing lead abatement, and repairing coatings on steel.

The contract requires a NACE Level 1 or an SSPC BCI certified coatings inspector, as well as a Certified Industrial Hygienist to oversee quality control, quality assurance, and safety.

Proposals are due March 26 for the contract, which has an expected term of 51 months.

In addition to the body of water it spans, the bridge is named for Giovanni da Verrazzano of Florence, the first known European navigator to enter into New York Harbor and the Hudson River in the service of King Francis I of France.

I hope that a Nace level 1 is not the only inspector required, for coatings.
