The University of South Florida is accepting bids for painting the interior of a seven-story existing residence hall on the Tampa, FL, campus.

Bids are due April 30. The owner held a mandatory pre-bid meeting Tuesday (April 16).

The $65 million Juniper-Poplar Hall houses more than 1,000 students. School officials are seeking painting contractors to refresh the space this summer.

Juniper-Poplar Hall opened in August 2009 and features 1,050 beds, three classrooms, a dining hall, and a convenience store. The dormitory is a part of the Honors College Living Learning Community, which fosters volunteerism, academic interests and achievements in a residential environment.

The residence hall cost $65 million to build, according to the University of South Florida. It was constructed by Peter Brown Construction; Gould Evans was the architect.

Scope of Work

The painting project at Juniper-Poplar Hall is set to begin on May 7 and should be completed by June 15.

All surfaces throughout the building that have existing paint are to be repainted, with the exception of the ceiling, according to bid documents. Surfaces to be repainted include the walls within the 11' 6" x 14' 6" dorm rooms, the metal door frames in the dorm rooms and bathrooms, and cove bases on the dorm room walls.

Surfaces throughout the Juniper-Poplar residence hall are to be coated using a low- or zero-VOC paint. The dorm opened in 2009.

Ferrous metal surfaces will be coated with an alkyd primer. Galvanized and non-ferrous metal surfaces will be coated with a solvent-based acrylic primer. Wood surfaces will be sanded, sealed, and coated with a latex primer. Cove bases will be coated with a direct-to-metal primer. Drywall will be sealed and primed with a latex-based coating.

All surfaces will then receive two finish coats of low- or zero-VOC, flat or semi-gloss acrylic topcoat.

The project also includes touch-up painting of finished surfaces, including factory-finished items.
