The second and final phase of cleaning and painting work on West Virginia's Hospital Bridge is now up for bid, following the project's $2.4 million first phase.

This will be the second and final phase of the cleaning and coating project. The first, larger phase involved a $2.4 million contract that was awarded last summer.

Bids are due May 14 to the West Virginia Department of Transportation. A cost estimate for the contract was not released.
Scope of Work
The project involves cleaning and recoating about 1,327 tons of structural steel between pier 3 and abutment 2 on the 28-span bridge over Wheeling Creek. The bridge is 3,120 feet long and 38 feet wide.
The steel will be pressure-washed and tested for soluble salts with remediation as needed. The surface will then be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane finish.
Class 2A containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 will be required, to contain the existing lead-based coatings and spent abrasives.
The project also includes spot-commercial power tool-cleaning (SP 15) and spot-coating structural steel surfaces at two piers with an epoxy-mastic system.
Phase 1
The first phase of work was awarded in August 2012 to Vimas Painting Co. of Campbell, OH for $2,415,981. That contract, which drew five bids, involved recoating 2,850 tons of structural steel.
