Pennsylvania is seeking contractors for coating and rehabilitation work on historic Schlicher's Covered Bridge, which spans Jordan Creek in the midst of a county-owned game preserve.

The project involves coating and staining new and existing timber surfaces on the bridge. The existing coatings include lead.

The work also includes applying a deck coating and applying a penetrating sealant to concrete abutment surfaces. In addition, 53 square yards of membrane waterproofing application will be installed on other surfaces.

Bids are due Thursday (May 23).

Bridge History

Sometimes called the "deer pen bridge" for its four-footed visitors from the surrounding Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve, the original Schlicher's Bridge dates to 1882.

The name is believed come from neighboring landowners when the bridge was built.

The single-span timber-covered structure, 17 feet wide and 109 feet long, is built with a Burr arch truss design. The bridge’s vertical siding is painted red, and the interior and horizontal siding around the low entrances are painted white.

Schlicher's is the youngest and shortest of the historic bridges in Lehigh County, according to A Self-Guided Tour of Seven Lehigh County Covered Bridges.

Schlicher's Bridge

Built in 1882, Schlicher's Covered Bridge was reinforced in 1995 with stone and cement.

When the bridge was rebuilt in 1995, stone abutments reinforced with concrete, as well as wing walls capped with cement, were added to the structure.
