Bids Invited for $2M Fireproofing Job

Authorities are seeking a new round of bids for a project to fireproof metal surfaces in a new eight-story academic building at the New York City College of Technology.

The City University of New York's Construction Fund and acting construction manager, F.J. Sciame Construction Company Inc., first issued the solicitation for the Brooklyn college in September, but have now rebid the fireproofing project, valued at $1.8 to $2 million.

Bids are due Dec. 17. A non-mandatory pre-bid meeting was held Nov. 21.

Scope of Work

The contractor will be expected to provide all labor, material, and equipment necessary to install spray-applied fire resistive materials and intumescent coatings throughout the new 356,839-square-foot academic building.

New York City College of Technology

The project includes installing spray-applied fire resistive materials and intumescent coatings throughout the new 356,839-square-foot academic building in downtown Brooklyn, NY.

The steel and iron surfaces will be solvent-cleaned to SSPC-SP 1, hand- and power-tool cleaned to SSPC-SP 2, and abrasive blast-cleaned to a commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6) before fireproofing application. A rust-inhibitive shop-coat primer should be applied as soon as possible after surface preparation.

The contractor will coat beams, columns and metal decking with spray-applied fire-resistive materials.

Intumescent thin film will then be applied to exposed beams or columns. A bonding primer will also be required for application on painted surfaces, according to the bid documents.

About the Building, University

The new academic building, designed by Perkins Eastman architects and set to open in 2016, will house a training lab, classrooms and office spaces, according to the university.

The $400 million facility replaces the school's aging Klitgord Center in downtown Brooklyn, according to local reports.

The structure will include an auditorium with 1,000 seats, a gymnasium, and an underground parking garage. The building requires 4,600 tons of structural steel and 388,000 square feet of superstructure concrete, according to project details.

CUNY’s New York City College of Technology, known as City Tech, has 16,000 students and 426 full-time faculty members.
